The mental health balance: are you crazy or just brilliant?

I have this friend who posted about mental health awareness. She mentioned she has a mental disorder in which she cannot process stress the way other people would seamlessly do. She breaks down in panic and have anxiety attacks whenever faced with triggering events — like a car accident in the middle of a busy street.

She called-out people who would claim that this is just a so-called “sakit mayaman”. No! This is mental disorder, people! And mental health is real! “Hindi ako baliw”, she said. And then she began to mention her incapacity to handle stress.

Then I thought, how many of these mental disorders apply to me? I think, maybe the right term would be “sakit ng matalino” and not “sakit mayaman”. The reason is, I know this friend to be an intellectual person.

So I thought, you can be intelligent and yet be weak in other mental aspects. You can be good with math and science but your brain is not built to process life problems. Or you can really handle your life well and be happy with it, but you can never be entrusted to handle your own finances. And maybe that’s one reason why some people are poor all their lives.

It’s just that philosophy that we are all unique and we must acknowledge our individuality.

I hear a lot of people say that most people going mad we’re highly intellectual once, like someone’s high-school teacher, who really had a lot of ideas to share and to hold, and probably lost his mind in the process. In which, it can really be true. And I hope I won’t reach that point one day. 😅

So you just can’t really have it all. One’s strength is someone else’s weakness and it will forever be that way. There has to be a balance; otherwise, we won’t fit in the equation. Either that, or basically don’t understand mental disorder at all.

If you have so much brainpower, you’re either called Einstein or crazy. At one point, I want to think that Einstein is just a crazy person who was able to impress and convince people because he found a way to demonstrate and explain his theories without losing composure. Other crazy people who had lots of ideas and theories failed to convince people and ended up as a homeless person on the streets. Sad life.

I even thought that what if the people we call “special”, because they’re different, are even more beyond special. What if they are the evolution of man and we think that they just don’t fit the world today so we suppress them instead of letting them achieve their full potential? I mean, what if? 😅

People often think that “they” are the mentally ill, abnormal, have mental disorder, social disease, or what have you. But! What if it’s the other way around? What if we are the weaklings and “they” actually have more to offer to the world? It sounds crazy, but that’s a story for another what if 😂
