Warning: this isn’t a movie review!
I was lying on my bed one night and trying to sleep, when my brain started acting up and won’t let me. So I started recalling my deepest memories of the past for anything interesting. I asked myself, what’s the best sci-fi movie of my childhood?
The first thing that popped out of my mind was Starship Troopers. I tried to think of something else, but it was hard to populate my mind and enumerate the good old movies I’ve seen. I actually thought of two more, but let’s talk about the first one.
Starship Troopers
Probably the best movie of my childhood because of the personal journey I experienced just to watch it as a kid.
As a kid, I was obviously fascinated with science fiction. And one of my most favorite topics was anything about outer space and what‘s out there.
Old School Movie Rentals
It was my first time to rent a movie at a rental store on my own. There was a pile of VHS cassettes stacked up horizontally and they were all behind the counter slightly above the cashiers’ height. I could only see the titles on the cassette labels and not see any movie poster on the VHS case.
But I was still just a kid back then and was too shy to ask. So I just scanned the pile of movie titles and searched for anything that sounds interesting.
“That one, please!”, I told the staff as I pointed to this movie. I didn’t ask anything except for how much it was. The staff just told me return it in 7 days, I paid my dues, and went home.
Improvised Movie House
The following day, I went to my uncle’s house and brought the tape with me. I invited my best buddy cousin to watch it with me. I told him it’s gonna be ridiculously awesome!
Back in the day, only few people have advanced entertainment sets in our place. We have our own VHS player, but my late uncle has a bigger TV and good sound system.
My elder cousins who owned the house came by and asked what we were watching. I told them it’s just kids stuff. I didn’t actually know there was some adult content in there. They decided to stay and watch with us.
Before we could even start, more of our friends and cousins came to join. If you’re wondering, my uncle’s house is accessible to nearby neighbors for people who want to watch free movies. It’s like a free movie house in the province back in the day. As long as they are family friends and the owners are at home, visitors are accommodated.
The Starship Experience
While watching the movie, everyone was so excited and thrilled. We didn’t really expect it to be that good! The concept of big bugs swarming people and kill them in a far away planet is literally out of this world and I liked it!
People kept on wondering and guessing what’s gonna happen next. The bigger bugs that eject cannon balls from their rear was absolutely fascinating. Viewers were also mysteriously amazed what was sucking people’s brain out, only to be astounded by the revelation of that enormous tick-like insect fed to full by the brains of every dead soldier on the field. Very disturbing, disgusting, but really interesting and amazing at the same time.
But the most thrilling part — was the naked scenes and the sex scene. Boy! That was a real climax. And my bigger female cousins were staring at me like, “I thought you said it was only kid’s stuff?” I just shrugged my shoulders like how am I supposed to know? The title just said “Starship Troopers”. It didn’t say R-18 on the label.
Anyway, everyone enjoyed the movie overall. And that’s why I think it my most memorable sci-fi childhood movie. Which reminds me, I still thought of two other more. Well, the second one is Alien Resurrection and the other one is Predator, probably part 2.
