My kids and I were watching a cartoon show in Netflix called, “True”. It’s about a girl and her best friend cat who both always try to help out citizens of their kingdom. I normally watch with my kids for two things:
- Watch over my kids and make sure what they’re watching is kid-friendly
- To relate with my kids and play along when they start singing cartoon songs or role-play with iconic cartoon scripts and their taglines
So what did it make me realize?
It’s about online games. My wife often tells me to stop playing if I can’t accept defeat. I always rebut and say, “it’s not that I hate defeat, I hate it only when I get defeated when I know I shouldn’t be”.
That’s basically pride talking, and I know it!
Suddenly, while I was preparing my daughter’s milk, a kid’s show in Netflix called “True” was discussing something about winning the race. One character was annoyed about not being able to win and this made her upset. But “True”, the main character of the show, asked the question, “but did you have fun?”
Wow that absolutely struck me! All this time I’ve been playing my games wrong. Winning satisfies me, but it flushes away the meaning of having fun while playing. Because whenever I don’t win, I always get disappointed and brood over it. But if I focused on the fun of doing it regardless of the outcome, then I would have been satisfied nonetheless.
I guess there is a plus side to going back to basics and watching silly cartoons with my kids at home. I realized that these shows have fundamental lessons to teach. And though I may have learnt important lessons in the past, they could have been easily forgotten as I passed through the harsh realities of adult life.
So yes, it is a bit refreshing to watch with your kids at times. In a lot of times, my wife even catches me hooked into kiddie shows more than my own kids. It’s amazing! You get to learn back the basics, at the same time you get to bond with family and enjoy with the kids.
