Hypocrisy and Irony: Is it the government’s fault or its citizens?

When people pile up beside a no loading and unloading zone sign, and PUVs still stop to pick up and drop off passengers there anyway… When footbridges are too mainstream so people prefer patintero on the road… And the list goes on…

In My Opinion
The view along the riverside in Hulo, Mandaluyong

I once rented a condo unit near the pasig river in Mandaluyong City. The residents beside our building is used to throwing used diapers, inside a plastic bag, on the river – and God knows what other trash they throw there. It’s the same river where people go fishing. The river walls have big painted signs asking people to keep the river clean, and yet I personally witnessed a man threw a diaper to the river like a discuss thrower. Is it truly the government or the citizens? I rest my case.

I was road-tripping with some friends once, and we talked about corruption on the streets. My friend, who was driving, insisted how he generally hated corruption. He mentioned corrupted traffic enforcers as a concrete example.

Couldn’t find a personal photo of Ayala in my archives, so I present to you a traffic enforcer in Araneta! Credits to WordPress free photos

As we drove along Ayala, we were stopped by an officer for a traffic violation. The driver knew he made a mistake. But it was too late. And running away from the officers will probably look like a ‘fast and the furious’ chase (in traffic).

So we stopped. And out of desperation not to get hassled by having to claim his license in a different city on a weekday, he decided to just give the officers some coffee, donuts, and probably two pieces of cake because he understands it’s merienda time. I’ll leave it at that.

So we drove away after that, rolled up our windows, and while we did, we shouted at him, “ipokritoooooooooo!!!!” And laughter filled the vehicle.
